How to inject more personality
Nobody Cares (Except you)
The power is in networks.
I’m sure you’ve heard about the six degrees of separation theory, where we are connected to everyone in the world through an average of 6 levels of social connections. Apparently, it has been studied by mathematicians, psychologists, and social scientists for many years. They’ve conducted multiple experiments to test the theory, with debated results. At any rate, the world is smaller than you think, and our web of social connections are a powerful force.
It’s these networks that influence how change happens.
Because we’re influenced by people we know.
If you can get enough people in enough networks to do something, many others will follow.
We’re all connected.
Believe Enough
People don’t believe in things that are too much in the past or in the future. We are mostly focused on what we can see and prove in the here and now.
But your history is real. What you did to create the future that is today is proof that it makes a difference.
What if you could believe in the future enough to cause you to act a certain way now?
That’s called vision.
What’s your vision for your future self?
What are you doing to make it a reality?
Going to Work
Writing every day means you write when you don’t feel like it.
It means you write when you have nothing to say.
That’s part of being a professional. Sitting down and doing the work consistently, on schedule. Not waiting for the muse, or when it feels good.
You go to work every day.
It’s called The Practice.
I’m practicing.
And working here.
Your Voice
For me or you?
Every day is a new adventure.
That’s why it should be easy to write something every day.
Of course, some days are more exciting or interesting than others.
That doesn’t mean I’m going to tell you about my day today.
I’m just telling you about about my day. (I just made that up, about about.)
I’m telling you that today was different, and interesting (probably not to you) and different than yesterday. Sure, that may be obvious, but the point is that you can write about something every day, even if all you did was lay in bed all day. You could write about that.
So, if you could write about the things that happened that day, or what you learned that day, or even about about that day, the meta, or higher concepts that that day represents, then you pretty much have an unlimited amount of material to write about.
See, I didn’t even tell you that I went for a walk.
(Because it wasn’t interesting.)
(Although very sunny. Which is interesting around here 😉
Write.
Missed but didn’t miss
The turnover time for a WordPress posting date must be something other than Pacific Standard Time. Woot!
It starts now.
I’m about to work on something big. I can’t really tell you what it is, but it starts now.
You’ll find out when it’s ready. But I wanted to draw a line in the sand, or on my blog, to show when this decision happened. So then I can track how long it takes to work.
And it’s going to take work. But the reward will be wonderful.
Starting is always fun.
Finishing is the hard part.
Shipping is the goal.
It doesn’t exist until it ships.
Now, go!
Back to the Grind (NOT)
Go matter!
This year, we chose to support our local tree farm, pay a little extra, and chop down our own Christmas tree.
It’s always a fun experience looking for just the right tree. Everyone has a different perspective on what is right for them, or their house, so it’s always a personal preference to find ‘the one’.
What’s interesting to me is the business model for Christmas tree farms. Here is something that took around 10 years to grow, and then you come let people cut them down in a few minutes. And in a few weeks your whole crop is gone.
We should have the patience of the Christmas tree farmer. Our success will not be overnight. Only after years of learning and unique experience will we have something valuable to offer the world.
Oh sure, it’ll have value before that time, but not as much. The price of the tree is determined by height.
And it’ll have different value for different people. You may be ‘the one’ for someone, but not for someone else.
The great thing about your value is that when someone uses it, it’s not gone. It’s still growing!
So sell your Christmas trees. Don’t cut them down.
